Cold Oatmeal is something new to me, and maybe it is to you. This recipe for cold oatmeal will require a trip to Trader Joe’s. If you can’t tell, we like Whole Foods, Costco and Trader Joe’s. Every once in a while I learn something from one place and modify it with ingredients from the other. This cold oatmeal breakfast is one of them.
Originally this recipe for cold oatmeal started out as part of a the Sambazon Three Day Cleanse that is sold at Costco. The “kit” includes three different liquid concoctions and recipes for either the “daring liquid” cleanse, or the more tame version which allows food.
I took the version that allowed food, and instead of making the veggie burger, I went to Veggielicious and had dinner there one night.
The other change I made was a minor adaption of the cold oatmeal, which by the way I had never had in any form before. Oatmeal in my life has always been served hot and tossed out when it got cold.
The recipe for Cold Oatmeal is really easy. Just pour equal parts milk and oatmeal into a sealed container and refrigerate. Overnight you have breakfast. The cleansing kit had a slightly different recipe which I modified mostly because I couldn’t find their ingredients. This version is easy to make every where and fits the basic ingredients of the Sambazon Cleanse plan.
1/2 cup steel cut oatmeal (I used Coaches Oats Brand)
1/4 cup Chocolate Almond Milk – Trader Joes Brand
1/4 cup unsweetened Coconut Milk – Trader Joes Brand
1/2 teaspoon powdered cocoa
1 tablespoon trader joes dried coconut chips
1/4 cup frozen triple berry blend – Costco/Trader Joes/Whole Foods all have this
Mix the oatmeal, cocoa powder and coconut chips in a small bowl you can seal. I use Snapware glass because I don’t like plastic, and I will usually make at least two at a time.
Pour the Chocolate Almond Smooth and Coconut Milk on top, no need to stir. If you like your oatmeal a little “wet” add just a tablespoon more of either one.
For a sweeter version with more calories you can use the Vanilla Coconut Milk. This version ends up tasting more like dessert though.
Finally add the frozen berries on top, seal the bowl and allow to refrigerate overnight. My wife prefers not to put the berries on until the morning. She says it tastes better. Your choice.
