Since adding our Springwell whole house filter and “demineralization” system, I noticed that the water tastes a lot better out of the tap. Oddly our tea kettle, cold brew pitcher, cappuccino machine and shower all now show a lot more water spots. This article is only about the tea kettle and coffee machines. But you’ll get the gist of how to clean the shower.
This morning I looked into our tea kettle and the entire bottom was covered in a grayish white crust. It went up the sides about an inch as well. In the past I needed 30% vinegar solution to clean the tea kettle, and if todays solution doesn’t work for you, give that a try using the same method.
Sadly I didn’t take before and after pictures, and hopefully I will next time and post them here for you. The fix takes just a few minutes but you need either highly concentrated vinegar or Simple Green. The big difference in the minerals in my tea pot now versus before we added the Springwell system is how much easier they are to clean. I do wonder what the “demineralizer” actually does and if it is adding anything to the water.
I use a 50/50 lemon Simple Green and water mix in a spray bottle. Drain the kettle. If it has a filter, take that out and drop it inside. Spray the entire sidewall and bottom. Wait a couple of minutes and then remove and rinse the filter. Use a soft vegetable scrub brush to finish the job. Rinse well (I like four good swirls of about 1/4 filled with water) and voila, a clean, mineral free tea kettle, coffee pot or cold brew pitcher.
