As a small business owner, the USB vs NAS drive question is a big one.
USB vs NAS might not sound like the question you are thinking about but it just might be if you are self employed or own a small business.
Recently a client sent me a bid for a new server. The cost was nearly $50,000. My first reaction was REALLY? Why not use a NAS? NAS means Network Attached Storage, wouldn’t that be enough?
It turned out the client uses a specific software that requires the capability of a full server. Thankfully most small business owners don’t need one. In this video CoolToysTV host Scott shows you how he uses both a USB external drive and a NAS drive to make sure his data is secure.
A USB Drive is a portable drive that connects directly to your computer. This is a great way to save money and not buy a very expensive internal drive on a laptop or new computer. They don’t do everything though and if you need to share files a USB external drive just won’t cut it.
NAS drives are the happy medium between that crazy expensive network server and a USB drive. With a NAS drive you can use RAID in order to use cheap drives to build solid and reliable data storage. In the video Scott gets it wrong though. RAID is Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives. He has a brain fart and says something else and we let him know it. Watch and see.
