How do you take your water, Acid or Alkaline?

Recently I was walking down “The Strand” in the Manhattan Beach area of Southern California, where I was intrigued by a house on the beach that had a sign rating different water brands and a webiste. After looking at the first site, I found several others. After reading all the anecdotal evidence about the health effects of acidic v. alkaline water, I decided to look further.

One website published sea water at 8.5 pH. Several sites said that high alkaline diets were the key to healthy living.  This is where I decided to try the alkaline water switch. My entire life I have loved to surf. I am not good at it, but I love it. Whenever I can just soak in the ocean, I feel better for days.  I just figured this was all in my head.  Maybe it still is.

Currently, I live in North Houston Texas. Even though we are a gulf city I am several hours from a decent beach and quite frankly I won’t sit in the water there. On my trips to South Florida I try to take advantage of the time and sneak in a little body surfing or at least a beach swim.

Since Ocean water is 8.5 on the ph scale and everyone in the family agrees that the beach is the most relaxing place for all of us, there had to be a connection. Mid November I started drinking untreated spring water with high mineral content and high ph. The high pH water is called alkaline water. I also gave up Diet Coke at the same time since the pH level is down in the acidic 2.5 or 3 range. That explains why Coke will eat the paint off of your car. It turns out milk has a very acidic pH also. Most of the articles written by MD’s indicated that this level was good for cleaning tile or removing paint, but not for consumption in anything more than very small quantities.

For the first few days I thought I was waking up with a hangover. I was dried out, tired and had a miserable headache. By day three I had a slight bloody nose. A little research indicated this could be my body flushing the garbage out the acidity was holding in. Not being a doctor it sounds a little off beat but I kept with it. Dry skin is a side effect of switching to an alkaline diet according to several of the sites. Sure enough my nose dried out and my hands did the same.

When day five rolled around,  I was beginning to think the whole thing was nuts and I was imagining everything.  Headaches from water just didn’t seem right. I figured that it must be the sulfites in the wine or nitrates in the bacon. I mean how could I get a bloody nose from drinking water or even dry skin from water? It must just be the dry (in Houston?) winter air. It didn’t make sense and I didn’t like it. The whole scenario did fit with my rule of always challenging myself and staying a little uncomfortable so I stuck with it.

By the end of a week the headaches went away and even better, I started sleeping better and felt much more aware when I woke up. I don’t really have a better word than aware. I just feel like I understand more of whats going on. Maybe I am just listening more since the caffeine isn’t making me a walking-talking buzz off.

Looking around to find high ph water isn’t easy. Fiji is pretty available at 7.5 pH as is Zepherhills in South Florida where I spend a lot of time. I found Icelandic Glacial Ice water at 7.75. This one is confusing since another brand called Glacier Ice is only 5.5. You really need to watch what you buy.

Most other bottles of water don’t post their pH levels. A little digging and you can find a few websites that help them out. I can’t verify the data but one water I found called HiOSilver is 8.0 on the pH scale. It tasted like gargling hydrogen peroxide. HiOSilver didn’t have a clean finish like the Fiji or Icelandic Glacial Water does. In fact it leaves you sort of dry mouthed if you are used to drinking a six pack of Coke before breakfast.. San Pelligrino is listed at 7.7-8.0 pH depending on which website you find. For the money, any of the three look good.

I don’t know if it is the water, cutting out diet coke or the placebo effect but I can tell you that I do feel better after just 30 days. I sleep less and sleep better as well.

Give it a try and let me know how you feel after 30 days. If you want to spend the big bucks, there are ionizers for the house. They aren’t cheap and that may explain how the guy can afford a house on the strand with a nice Harley parked in the living room window. If I keep feeling good, I might spend the money and buy the ionizer to change my tap water from 5.87 pH to about 7.9 or so. There are several lists of water on the internet I can’t find in any store, but if you can find them tell us all where please. I look forward to finding out what you find out.

  1. Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.

  2. Here you go http://www.knowthecause.com, http://www.mercola.com.these are just two of the many sites that promote holistic healing.
I just found out that acid water, a bi-product of making alkaline water, is excelente to kill bacteria, virus, fungus. YOU DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER, IS FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY. it is excelent for your house plans; for acne when apply as an astringent.
As for the alkaline there is a new product that I do recommend it is Alka Power; it is produce here in Southern California and slowly it is has begun to be distributed to other states.
Also you can make your own by adding a teaspoon of baking soda to a gallon of water.
There is another site that provides info as to the benefits of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
I found these links very interesting as well. Dr Simoncini is an strong supporter of treating certain disease with sodium bicarbonate.
