Union Leaders Pursue Best Path to Restore American Airlines to Preeminence

Fort Worth, Texas (April 20, 2012) — The Transport Workers Union (TWU), the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and the Allied Pilots Association (APA) issued the following joint statement today:

“On behalf of nearly 55,000 American Airlines front-line employees—including the 17,000 members of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the 10,000 members of the Allied Pilots Association and the 26,000 members of the Transport Workers Union—we are pleased to confirm our support of a possible merger between our airline and US Airways. We have reached agreements on terms sheets for collective bargaining agreements that would govern the American Airlines employees of the merged airline with US Airways.

“This significant step represents our shared recognition that a merger between American Airlines and US Airways is the best strategy and fastest option to complete the restructuring of American Airlines, enabling it to exit the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process and restore American Airlines to a preeminent position in the airline industry.

“As envisioned, a merger of US Airways and American Airlines provides the best path for all constituencies, including employees of both American Airlines and US Airways. The contemplated merger would be based on growth, preserve at least 6,200 American Airlines jobs that would be furloughed under the company’s standalone strategy, and provide employees of both American and US Airways with competitive, industry-standard compensation and benefits. Over the long term, the combined new airline would support greater job security and advancement opportunities for both American Airlines’ and US Airways’ employees that are far superior to those available to employees at either airline on a stand-alone basis. Importantly, by avoiding a lengthy and contentious 1113 process, the new carrier would be able to emerge from bankruptcy more quickly.

“A merger would create a foundation to establish American Airlines as a vigorous competitor of the two larger network carriers and the industry at large. Customers of both airlines and air travelers in general will benefit greatly from a viable third network carrier and significantly enhanced travel choices.”

That is the full text of the unions’ joint statement.

Allied Pilots Association

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association—the largest independent pilot union in the United States—is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 10,000 pilots of American Airlines, including 649 pilots not yet offered recall from furlough. The furloughs began shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Also, several hundred American Airlines pilots are on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s Web site address is www.alliedpilots.org. American Airlines is the nation’s largest international passenger carrier and fifth-largest cargo carrier.

Association of Professional Flight Attendants

Founded in 1977, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) is the largest independent Flight Attendant union in the nation. It represents 17,000 Flight Attendants at American Airlines. APFA Members live in almost every state of the nation and serve millions of Americans as they travel the nation and the world. In 2003, APFA played a major role in keeping American Airlines solvent and out of bankruptcy by giving back an employee bailout of $340 million in annual salary and benefits, for a total of over $2 billion and counting. APFA had been in negotiations with American for almost four years when the carrier filed for chapter 11-bankruptcy protection on November 29, 2011. Laura Glading is serving in her second four-year term as president of the union.

Transport Workers Union

The Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) represents 200,000 workers and retirees, primarily in commercial aviation, public transportation and passenger railroads. Included in the union’s membership are 26,000 workers at American Airlines. TWU represents seven work groups at American Airlines including Fleet Service, Aviation Maintenance Technicians (aircraft mechanics), Stock Clerks, Dispatchers, Ground School Instructors, Flight Simulator Technicians and Facility Maintenance Mechanics, TWU also represents Dispatchers at US Airways. The union is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.

Long Beach, CA – April 16, 2012

TruSpeed Motorsports had a mixed weekend in the Pirelli World Challenge race on the streets of Long Beach, CA, eventually bringing home three of their four drivers inside the top 10. Lawson Aschenbach, driving the #1 PrivacyStar / Entrust Porsche 911 GT3 Cup slipped one spot in the championship to sit 3rd overall after a 5th place finish at Long Beach, while Justin Marks, driving the #46 GoPro / MMX Porsche 911 GT3 put the tumult of the opening weekend at St. Petersburg behind him to come home a solid 8th. Tomy Drissi, in the #47 The Three Stooges Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, was his normal solid self, claiming a 6th place finish to climb in the championship. Jeff Courtney, driving the #99 Kenda Tire / RecStuff.com Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, had contact in the race and was forced to retire.

The team entered the race weekend in the thick of the championship battle, and enthused about racing in front of its home crowd, just 30 minutes from its race shop in Costa Mesa, CA. Unpredictable and sopping wet weather greeted the team on Friday morning, but the team had its spirits lifted when Justin Marks and Tomy Drissi went 1-2 in the weekend’s first session. The weather was forecast to be dry and sunny for Sunday’s race, and as the team set about prepping the cars for qualifying, they compensated for the difficultly they’d had getting their tires up to optimum pressure in the Friday session by sending all four drivers out at slightly higher pressures.

Team Manager Tyler Tadevic explained, “The circumstances of the qualifying session were a bit different than what we’d experienced in Friday practice, and simply put, the Cadillacs and the Volvo were just on it. We’d increased the initial tire pressures for all of our guys, and just at the tail end of the short session, Lawson got loose and kissed the wall with the left rear of his car into turn 6. That incident resulted in some more significant damage to the sub-frame of the car than we could initially tell just by looking at it, but it was a testament to our crew that they got his car back in racing shape.”

As the TruSpeed cars took the green flag for Sunday’s race, with Lawson in 5th, Justin in 9th, Tomy in 11th and Jeff in 13th, the field bunched into turn one and Lawson, having gone around the outside of the #77 Ferrari into turn one, got balked and fell back to 9th place by the end of the first lap. He would spend the duration of the race battling with teammate Tomy Drissi, and eventually both he and Tomy were able to get around the Ferrari and begin to catch the lead trio. The race was a rare caution-free event, and due to the tight confines of the street circuit, passing was at a premium. Lawson went on to finish 5th, Tomy 6th and Justin 8th, while Jeff had contact that forced him to retire from the race.

Tadevic said, “We had a mixed weekend, if I’m honest. As a team, we’ve yet to put together a really solid weekend here at Long Beach, but we managed to salvage good championship points here. We’d hoped for more, and we feel like we left some fruit on the tree, but the next few races will really be a dogfight for the entire paddock. With Miller coming up next, we may be a bit down on straight-line speed to some of the larger displacement cars, but Laguna’s just after that and we’ve traditionally gone well there. All of our guys have ample experience at the next two tracks, and as they say, it’s a long championship and we’re just getting underway. We’re looking forward to getting out to Salt Lake City here in a few weeks and taking the fight back to the Cadillac boys there!”

TruSpeed Motorsports races next on April 27-28 at Miller Motorsports Park, outside of Salt Lake City, UT.

Stealth Manufacturing appointed its first authorized Dealer in California on April 6th.

Smith’s Golf Cars has become the first California dealer for Stealth® Manufacturing, Austell, Georgia. Now, along with EZ-GO and HDK Express Golf Cars, and Xtreme Kartz custom golf cars, Smith’s is able to offer the Stealth Electric side-by-side utility vehicles. The Smith’s are excited to offer a vehicle that is strong enough to do heavy work in a vineyard or farm without the noise, odor, or cost of running a gas or diesel machine.

Stealth Manufacturing designs and builds electric and hybrid utility vehicles favored by hunters, vineyards, estates and nurseries. Stealth’s vehicles are unique for a number of reasons. First and foremost, they build the vehicles in the USA of USA-made components. Second, Stealth units are powered by 72-volt systems making them more powerful and long-lasting than the competition. One unique feature of Stealth’s Night Hawk vehicle is that it converts in seconds from a 2-passenger vehicle with a tilting cargo bed into a 4 passenger vehicle.

In business for over 25 years, Smith’s Golf Cars is dedicated to servicing all the vehicles they sell. No other dealer north of the Golden Gate Bridge can match the experience or service represented by Smith’s. When Stealth Manufacturing decided they were ready to enter the California Market, their first target for a dealership was Smith’s because of their excellent reputation and experience.

Smith’s Xtreme Kartz division makes custom electric vehicles as well, like this:
Is Mr. Hale just trying to keep his high paying management job with AMR?

It has been rumored for sometime that AMR, the parent of American Airlines has been in the eye of the managers at US Airways. In order for this deal to work, the management at USAir will need help from the major unions at American. If the three big unions at AA didn’t agree and fought with AA management to prevent the takeover it would be a deal breaker. Pilots, Mechanics and Flight Attendants are the three unions that can be game changers in any merge, takeover or bankruptcy in the airline business. The mechanics effectively ended Eastern Airlines after their bankruptcy deal.

Rumors have been circulating for a while about AMR hiding assets and profits overseas. One of the foreign stocks owned by AA recently disappeared from listings. A move thought to prevent the publication of information about AMR’s true financial situation.

Unions are very sensitive to the tactic used at Eastern, Continental and United to generate sudden profits after bankruptcy and eight figure bonuses to senior management and board members. MSNBC reported that the director of the PBGC (Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation) told the senior managers at AMR and the courts that the PBGC will fight any attempt to turn over the pension liability of AMR to the PBGC and further that the PBGC would use it’s reach as a US Government entity to seize assets overseas. It is thought this is the reason that AMR came back to the unions and offered a “freeze”.

It is well published that AMR has retained some very expensive bankruptcy attorneys. Rumors of Rothchilds and Bain & Company (Mitt Romney’s former home) using offshore asset moves and profit holding to bleed AMR of cash in the US are running rampant. Without the filings of the foreign stocks it gets tougher to prove for the three big labor unions at American Airlines. That must be why those law firms can charge $14 Million a month.

US Airways as a suitor has been a rumor for a while too, but one has to wonder why? They still can’t get the US Air and America West pilots to play nice together, so how do they expect American pilots want to join into that hornets nest. Well it appears the answer is US Airways management doesn’t care. If they can run an airline with two pilots groups, why not three.

Some quick research might shed some light on why US Air is looking so closely at AA. First if AMR was hiding all that money overseas, wouldn’t you want it? This leads to a whole different discussion of shareholder lawsuits and fiduciary liability I’ll save for another day. Personally if I had friends with a billion cash, I would want to work a deal on AMR.

Second, AMR effectively bought out all of the production remaining for the next five years of both Airbus and Boeing with the highly publicized “Biggest Aircraft Order Ever”. US Airways would have control over all of those aircraft deliveries. What they don’t need, they could sell at a profit. Finally the icing on the cake. An analysis of the age of US Airways pilots indicates that US Airways is aboutt 24 months from the beginning of an internal meltdown due to the lack of pilots and they know it.

Four years ago the airline industry saw a major problem. Air Traffic Controllers and Pilots were about to hit their mandatory retirement age in big numbers. The government can use the military to train Air Traffic Controllers and get replacements in about 24 months. In fact they have hired people with zero experience right off the street this year. You can’t do that with pilots. To become an airline ready pilot under the current rules, you are looking at something close to the cost of an off shore medical school. Who wants to spend that kind of money to start out at $24,000 a year? Also pilots take time to build. The airlines say a good Captain takes four to five years after starting at the airline to be at the level they really want.

Congress gave the airlines a five year reprieve to fix the problem by extending the retirement age from 60 to 65 for airline pilots. Next September, that five years is over and the retirement wave begins. US Airways has one of the highest average ages for pilots and will see one of the largest exits of pilots over the next 7 years according to data from the Airline Pilots Association.

US Air needs pilots and American has them. So now the question is will American Pilots want to work for US Air? Given what AMR management is offering the pilots at American it won’t take much to convince them that US Air is offering a better deal. Rumors are flying today that the deal is accepted by Americans Pilots and Mechanics. Last weeks vocal protests which were “leaked” by American Airlines VP Flight John Hale stating “There is no benefit” of going with a US Air deal must make one pause to say “Me thinks Mr. Hale doth protest too much.” Is Mr. Hale just trying to keep his high paying management job with AMR?

Today, rumors are flying of secret meetings of the Pilots Union and Mechanics Union from American and US Air, and letters of agreement being signed. Maybe Mr. Hale knew last week about this and is trying to get his troops to rebel. Either way it is clear that AMR management has a lot on their plate, and trying to protect the assets overseas and their big bonuses is getting tougher every day, after all you can’t fly planes without pilots to fly them or mechanics to fix them.

Lawson Aschenbach enters round three in a tidy second place in points. Aschenbach’s claimed two race wins on the road at St. Petersburg to open the season, but was penalized out of his first win after the race itself. World Challenge has amended his penalty, and he has been categorized fourth in round one of the championship; he sits 11 points adrift of championship leader Johnny O’Connell.

Lawson, driving the #1 PrivacyStar / Entrust Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, said, “Long Beach is the crown jewel of the World Challenge season in my mind. It’s TruSpeed’s home race so we are going to be fighting hard for the hometown crowd. There is always a great atmosphere surrounding the weekend and we are looking forward seeing all the fans. Plus, it’s an amazing feeling anytime you get to drive a racecar down Shoreline Drive!”

Justin Marks had a difficult first weekend of the season in St. Petersburg, but the California native looks set to rebound on a track he knows well. Marks has driven the famous street circuit in World Challenge, American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am Rolex Series competition, and like many drivers, considers the Long Beach circuit to be a classic. He’ll look to claim a solid result in his #46 GoPro / MMX Porsche GT3 Cup on a track whose mix of direction changes, slow corners and long straights has traditionally favored rear-engined Porsches.

For Tomy Drissi, driver of the #47 The Three Stooges / TruSpeed Porsche GT3, Long Beach is truly a home race. Drissi, a native of Hollywood, CA, has a day job in the film and television industry, and this weekend sees the opening of the movie, The Three Stooges, that is sponsoring his car. Drissi will pull double-duty as well, racing both in the Pirelli World Challenge Series as well as the American Le Mans Series this weekend.

For Team Manager Tyler Tadevic, Long Beach is always a highlight of the racing calendar. He said, “With so many of our friends, family and partners hailing from Southern California, it’s always an amazing experience to race on the streets of Long Beach. Growing up here, as so many of us did, this event is really central to the whole car culture that we’re all connected to, and it’s always a pleasure to both race here but also support the organizers of the event. We’ve been happy to have a hand in promoting the circuit and the event as much as we have this year – it’s really an honor, and we’re excited to roll out of the truck and get to racing.”

The Pirelli World Challenge Series will race Sunday, April 15 at 4:15pm PT. Television coverage will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) at 3:00pm ET on Sunday, April 29.

Lawson Aschenbach helped TruSpeed Motorsports start its Pirelli World Challenge championship in style this weekend in St. Petersburg, FL, winning both races on the road, setting fastest race laps and starting Sunday’s race from pole. Aschenbach, driving the #1 PrivacyStar / Entrust Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, took the checkered flag in Saturday’s race after a tight battle all race long, but was found to have passed under a yellow flag and was retroactively issued a 60-second penalty after the race had finished. The penalty dropped him back to an 10th place finish, though he set the four fastest laps of the race, more than enough to earn him pole position for Sunday’s race two.

Sunday’s race was a much more straightforward affair for Lawson, as he turned his pole position into the race lead heading into turn one, commanded every restart with authority and led every lap of the event.

“Other than the minor issue during Saturday’s race, I’d say it was a flawless weekend for us,” Aschenbach said. “Our Porsche 911 GT3 was great in each session, although the track was tough for traffic. During the races, it was really survival mode, but our Porsche was just fast. It was definitely a good track for our car, and taking victory to start the season is a fantastic way to start the year. Hats off to TruSpeed Motorsports, the team did such a great job, and I can’t thank them enough. We had a bunch of guests from our partners PrivacyStar and Entrust, and it’s doubly satisfying to put on a good show in the race for them!”

TruSpeed brought a brace of Porsches to race at St. Petersburg, including the #46 GoPro/Mooresville Motorplex Porsche of Justin Marks, the #47 Three Stooges / TruSpeed Porsche of Tomy Drissi, and the #99 Kenda Tire / RaceStuff.com Porsche of Jeff Courtney.

Justin Marks, having qualified 10th for Saturday’s race, had a great start in race one and passed three cars in the opening laps before being contacted by James Sofronas and Dino Crescentini. Marks lost two laps for repairs, but went on to finish 11th in GT. By virtue of his fastest race lap on Saturday, Justin started Sunday’s race in 8th position, and climbed to 6th by the turn 4-5 complex on the opening lap before being pushed into the wall by another car. The damage to Marks’ left rear wheel prevented him from making it back to pit lane for repairs, so unfortunately his day was over early.

Tomy Drissi qualified 11th for Saturday’s race and overcame a penalty for jumping a restart to finish a strong 5th in the #47 Three Stooges / TruSpeed Porsche during the race. His fast race lap qualified him 9th for Sunday’s race two, and Tomy got away at the drop of the green flag for a tremendous start, gaining several positions on the first lap and a half. On lap two, he developed what would become a terminal mechanical problem with the car, and he retired on lap four.

Jeff Courtney, of Milwaukee, WI, qualified his #99 Kenda Tire / RaceStuff.com Porsche 911 GT3 Cup 13th for Saturday’s race, and drove an outstanding race to claim 6th place, in the process qualifying 10th for race two. Courtney went on to finish 7th in race two, scoring solid championship points in his debut for the team.

Team Manager Tyler Tadevic said, “It’s been a fantastic race weekend for all of us at TruSpeed. There have been a lot of moving parts, by running four cars in the GT class, there have been a lot of new faces in our garages this weekend. I couldn’t be more proud of the team for how they’ve come together; our guys worked around the clock to get our cars prepared and get them tuned for this circuit, and I’m happy to report that all four of our cars were fast this weekend. With the time we’re afforded between now and Long Beach, we’ll get back to our shop and work on dialing the cars in that much more for another street circuit. We’ve definitely got some unfinished business to take care of with Justin, but to leave St. Pete with a victory under our belt, it feels like we’ve got the championship defense off on the right foot.”

TruSpeed Motorsports races next on Friday, April 13 in support of the Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix.

March 16 – Sebring, FL

TruSpeed Motorsports got its inaugural IMSA GT3 Challenge season underway in style at Sebring this weekend, as team driver Sloan Urry finished 10th and 6th in races one and two of the season, and Tom Haacker finished 19th and 17th. With the huge field of Porsches contesting the race at the historic and bumpy Sebring International Raceway circuit, the team expected multiple caution periods in both races. Instead, race one ran entirely under green, which affected Sloan Urry’s strategy immediately.

In qualifying for Thursday’s race one, Urry lined up 6th on the grid, the order being determined by fastest practice times up to that point, and on his first timed lap, a red flag brought the session to a standstill. As he eventually was able to get back underway in the session, a flat-spotted left front tire compromised his qualifying run, and Urry ended up 13th. Due to Sloan’s mid-pack qualifying performance, the team crafted a strategy that factored in likely and multiple caution periods. With the race running caution-free, Sloan was able to pick off three drivers, finishing 10th overall and netting himself the 12th position on the grid for race two.

The team encountered slight gearbox problems on Urry’s #20 TruSpeed Porsche 911 GT3 Cup during race one, and swapped two of the ratios out in time for race two, the Porsche performing with trademark reliability in both races. Friday’s race went more closely to plan for the team with several caution periods shaking up the running order. Sloan passed four cars on track and another two that had off-track incidents, garnering a strong 6th place finish and picking up the Yokohama Tires Hard Charger award for being the driver who improved his position most from race start to finish.

Tom Haacker, driving the #80 G22 Racing / TruSpeed Porsche GT3 Cup, had a solid weekend at Sebring, improving his laptimes in each practice session and in both races. Having qualified 24th for Thursday’s race one, Tom improved his position through the race to finish 19th in class, and set his fastest time of the weekend to that point. In Friday’s chaotic race two, Haacker kept his nose clean and avoided the multiple collisions that would unfold in the field around him, and having qualified 24th for race two, picked up several drivers to finish 17th in class. With the goal of running inside the top 20 in his rookie race in the IMSA GT3 Challenge, Haacker headed home a satisfied racer.

Team Manager Tyler Tadevic said, “We’re thrilled to leave Sebring with the finishes that the guys put in this weekend, and having achieved the goals we set as a team and for both Sloan and Tom, we’ll get ready Miller Motorsports Park with heightened expectations and a serious sense of confidence. Sloan had a great weekend and managed to race through some adversity on Thursday, then he kept his cool and earned the Hard Charger award from Yokohama Tires on Friday. Tom did what he set out to do, which was learn, improve his racecraft and book solid points, so across the board, we’re happy with how we went. It’s a short month between now and packing the trucks for Miller, and we’ve got our work cut out for us!
